Why isn't my business showing on Google?

It's a frustrating moment: you search for your business, or for what you do, and a competitor appears instead. The cause is usually one of a handful of fixable problems. Start with the checks below, in order.

First, what exactly isn't showing?

There are two different places your business can appear, and they have different causes:

  • Your website, in the regular search results.
  • Your Google Business Profile, in Google Maps and the map results at the top of local searches.

Also note what you searched for. Not appearing for your business name is a technical or setup problem. Not appearing for "plumber near me" is usually a competition and relevance problem.

1. Google hasn't indexed your site

Search Google for site:yourdomain.com. If nothing comes back, Google hasn't indexed your site. New sites can take some time to appear. Register the site with Google Search Console and submit a sitemap, which also tells you about any problems Google has found.

2. Your site is telling search engines to stay away

Websites can instruct search engines not to index them — useful while a site is being built, and a common mistake when that setting is never turned off at launch. Google Search Console's page indexing report will show pages excluded this way.

3. Your Google Business Profile isn't claimed or verified

Without a verified profile, you're unlikely to appear in Maps or the local results. Claiming and verifying it is free. Then fill in everything: categories, services, hours, photos, and your website.

4. Your details don't match

If your business name, address, or phone number differ between your website, your Google profile, and directories, search engines are less sure they're the same business. Make them identical everywhere.

5. Your pages don't say what you do

A homepage with a slogan and a photo gives search engines little to go on. Each main service should have its own page that says plainly what it is, who it's for, and where you offer it.

6. Your site is slow or hard to use on a phone

Search engines favor pages that work well for visitors. A site that's slow or awkward on a phone is at a disadvantage — and loses the visitors it does get.

7. Distance and competition

For local searches, Google weighs how close a business is to the person searching. You may appear for searches near you and not across town. And in a competitive field, others may simply have more complete profiles, more reviews, and more useful pages.

8. Few or no reviews

Reviews help people choose, and they're part of how local results are decided. A steady flow of genuine reviews, with thoughtful responses, is one of the most useful things a local business can build.
